CanConversations

CanConversations is the new podcast from Friends of Canadian Media and The Walrus Lab that puts Canadian media in your hands. Hosted by Friends‘ Executive Director Raj Shoan, this show features the perspectives of journalists, policy experts, and industry leaders while putting you at the centre of the conversation. Each episode will delve deep into the policy debates, political developments, and personal stories at the heart of today’s media landscape, with one central question at issue: who gets to decide what Canadians watch, read, and hear?

Raj Shoan is the Executive Director of Friends of Canadian Media. He is a policy consultant and lawyer with broad experience in communications law and regulatory affairs. He has served at the CRTC in a variety of capacities over his lengthy career, including Senior Policy Analyst, Legal Counsel, Senior Advisor and the CRTC Ontario Commissioner. Prior to managing his own consulting firm, Raj served as Director of Regulatory Affairs for both CBC/Radio-Canada and Astral Media Radio Inc., as well as Legal Counsel with Industry Canada and General Counsel for ACTRA.

Who gets to tell Canada’s story?

Are news deserts the new normal?

In this episode of CanConversations, host Raj Shoan sits down with Randy Kitt, Director of Media at Unifor, to discuss the value of local news and the threats that stare it down every day.
